Travel

Hey friends!

So, I get a lot of comments about travelling with the kids and how hard it must be, and I have to say honestly, my heart hurts when I’m not with them! So why not? If you have the right gear, it can be easy. Having an easy to use travel crib can make all the difference, or in this case, a great portable high chair! It all helps. When you home school and have some flexibility within your daily routine, it can be done!

The three most important things I focus on when travelling with the kids are:

  1. Keeping in a routine, even through a time change as much as possible. Adjust slowly to the time changes, and remember jet lag is hard, even for adults. Keep kids hydrated and well fed, and be patient, and have a flexible schedule as much as possible. If you have work or scheduled items that aren’t flexible, then seek support so that you can keep commitments while they rest if needed.
  2. Prepare for the flight: flying is harder for little ones than it is for us! Keep everyone hydrated and well fed and be prepared to support them if they’re not comfortable- kids don’t handle air pressure changes as well as we do and might experience ear pain while during take off and landing when flying, they might be nervous about the experience of flying, or find it stressful to be out of their usual environment, so be prepared as much as possible to support them, and talk to you doctor about preparing and what you can do to help with it all. They all handle it differently- and some are more vocal than others. We have one little one that is just exited and loves every minute, and another that hates being away from home… they’re all so different!
  3. Take a good stroller or carrier – kids get tired and if you’re carrying bags around, or even a backpack, it’s not easy if you have kids that don’t want to walk anymore! A light weight stroller or carrier or both are a must!

Items we take with us:

To start with, eating out all the time with toddlers and babies, a high chair is a must and we have found that a lot of the portable ones are so flimsy and not stable and just… not safe enough that we could relax and eat at all! We luckily recently discovered this gem of a high chair- The Stokke Clikk high chair – which is not only a great for at home, but it travels really easily which is great for us- especially travelling so much for performances (hopefully again soon!) We couldn’t be more pleased with this product- easy to assemble, disassemble, easy to clean, high quality, strong, sturdy and safe and watch to the end to see how easy it is to pack it all up and get rocking! I rarely leave the kids at home unless it’s an overnight thing only, so I like to be ready for travel. Check out our video on this awesome high chair:

Other great items for travel that we take:

Portable potty- it’s not always easy to find something in time on a road trip if your child has to sit on a toilet seat!
iPads with educational software for kids for long flights
Travel table for airplane seats or car rides
Travel crib
Carrier for tired toddlers
These magic blow up squares that allow kids to lie down in economy!

Any tips or ideas we can add? I’d love to hear them!
