Violinist Sophie Armstrong is a performer, composer, author, humanitarian and educator with a passion for living. Over the course of her career, Sophie has travelled the globe with her music, sharing her story through performance and inspiring audiences to feel. Born in London, England, and raised in Sydney, Australia, Sophie is now based in Kelowna, British Columbia, with her young family.
Described as passionate and fearless, Sophie inspires and intrigues audiences as she draws on her travels and invites listeners into her imagination through her world-beat sound. She is most at home when she is on stage. Raised in a family of classical musicians, Sophie rebelled early, launching her own career in heavy metal before exploring a wide range of genres and performing alongside other artists on her way to defining a sound entirely her own.
After earning her Bachelor of Music Performance (Violin Major) from the Sydney Conservatorium, Sophie’s travels for performances in the Middle East and Europe drew her into theatrical performance, dance, pop, Middle Eastern, and modern classical music.
Sophie launched her recording career with a string of pop releases, most notably “Carmen” (2003) and “Colliding Worlds” (2004, released through MGM Distribution Australia), and toured sold-out venues including the Metro Sydney, with a showcase at Australian Music Week at the Espy in Melbourne under management by Mark Ellis. Sophie drew major media attention through her campaign with the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation, donating proceeds from the single “Carmen” to the charity.
Since then, Sophie has performed at major events around the world, touring in France, Turkey and appearing at festivals across the globe. She has worked alongside EMI and Warner Music artists including Goldfrapp, The Hoodoo Gurus, Josh Groban, and The Veronicas, and has performed for Olivia Newton-John and for dignitaries including Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai at the Emirates Palace, the Bahraini Royal Family, the Australian Ambassador to Turkey, and Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
Since relocating to Canada in 2011, Sophie has performed with members of the Canadian Tenors, Chantal Kreviazuk, Juno Award winner Jarvis Church (Philosopher Kings), Juno Award winner Keshia Chante, Dan Hill, Mark Masri, and Juno Award-winning guitarists Pavlo and Oscar Lopez. Sophie spent much of 2013 writing and recording with artists including Grammy and Juno Award winner Dan Hill, Amy Sky, Mark Masri, and Pavlo, among others. In 2014, she released “Be Yourself,” a collaborative record with other female artists through the Luxury Wafers label in support of the Every Woman Festival, and was named a recipient of the Women of Vision Award from Global Television Canada. That same year, Sophie also appeared on Mark Masri’s PBS special and companion record.
In October 2015, ahead of the birth of her first child, Sophie released “Kissed by the Moon,” a lullaby album of original compositions alongside popular classics including the famed Brahms’ Lullaby, featuring Sophie on violin, Susanne Ruberg Gordon on piano, and Russell Broom on classical guitar. Her album “The Journey” followed in August 2016, amid the adventures of motherhood — Sophie welcomed a son in 2015 and daughters in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, she received the Cultural Ambassador Award at the national Women of Inspiration Awards in Calgary. Two of her favourite recordings, “Unvanquished” (2019) and “Trapeze” (May 2022), were brought to life in music videos shot in spectacular locations across Scotland and Canada.
Sophie stepped back from the stage in 2021 following a serious car accident that required surgery and an extended rehabilitation. In 2024, she released “The Music Thief,” a children’s book about self-expression inspired by her family’s journey with neurodiversity, and began performing intermittently again, launching The Heart Strings Show in 2025. That same year, “The Music Thief” received an Independent Press Award in the children’s fiction category and was shortlisted for a Whistler Independent Book Award. Sophie’s ensemble, Heart Strings, toured Canada in spring 2026 and will release a live record in fall 2026, ahead of a return to the road for a spring 2027 tour.
